an interesting phenomenon

I woke up on my bathroom floor this morning, all stretched out like a board and flat on my back.
As I came to, I stared at the ceiling thinking "it's been a while since this has happened."

Fainting is an interesting phenomenon.

Back in my early 20's I considered myself to be a "fainter."
I can't tell you how many times I've bruised my face, cracked it open and looked like a battered woman.

circa 2006

The most odd place I ever fainted was in a port-o-potty.
Imagine it.
Yeah, gross.

Oddly enough, I haven't fainted once since I met Bryan, so I assumed I simply outgrew it.

Then there was this morning.
Me praising Jesus for sleeping with my hair in a low bun last night, something I rarely do... because I'm convinced this low bun created a soft pillow for the back of my head to fall onto.
Without it, I would have fallen onto the hard bathroom floor and onto the back of my head.

Once I got myself up off of the floor I crawled back into bed and slept until 10:00am, something I never do.

Since I've woken up for the day I've felt fine.
A little out-of-sorts, but overall fine.

Have you ever fainted?

  1. I used to faint too, but I haven't in awhile! The craziest place I fainted was on the NY subway on my way to work and that was a little scary. I had to ask a stranger to help me b/c I knew it was about to happen (I saw gray) and before I knew it, I ran out, hailed a cab and was laying down flat in the back of that cab on my way home b/c I felt so wiped out. The cab driver freaked out too! I once got it checked out at the doc but he said I was fine. Glad you're ok!

  2. i've fainted about 3x in my life... the 1st time was on a tour of my college, the 2nd in a mcdonalds (alcohol may or may not have played a factor in this! hee hee) and 3rd on the sidewalk of NYC! Its totally scary and random!
Its been about 6 yrs since the last episode so i'm hoping i've outgrown it too!
    Glad you didn't get hurt!

and thinking back on those mishaps i probably shouldn't even be alive or walking.

  4. That is scary my friend. I have never fainted, but have been around when someone else has. Very scary. Have you ever seen a doctor about it?

  6. Ahhh I'm sorry to hear that you fainted :( I've only fainted twice, but they were really similar to your experiences (minus the bruises, thankfully!). The first time I just woke up on the floor, and was so confused as to how I got there. To this day, I have no idea how long I was out for. The next time was in college. I heard a loud THUD and then woke up on the floor. My roommate from down stairs asked what happened, and I was so disoriented that it took me a while to realize that I had fainted. Soo weird! Glad to hear you are okay though, thank goodness for your low bun! And glad you got some extra sleep :) Rest up!

  7. I faint! I have really low blood pressure so if I get sick I faint. Also sometimes in the morning when my blood sugar is low I'll faint. It isn't often but it happens. I realize now this makes me sound like i'm a mess but i'm not:) Hope you figure out what makes you faint

  9. that is so weird!!! I have never fainted, but many time I felt like I was going to so I quickly got on my knees just incase to break the fall. That sounds like it could be dangerous!

  12. I used to do it a lot when I was younger. I was a guinea pig for a long time at the hospital and they still never found out what was causing them. They said it was "growing pains". It hasn't happened since.. thank Jesus!

  13. Yikes!!! DId you know you got up earlier and went into the bathroom? Or did you sleep walk into the bathroom? Either way fainting sounds scary (and gross in a port-a-potty)!

  16. I'm a fainter too! I've figured out the feeling of when it's coming on and literally drop whatever I'm doing and sit down wherever I am. The oddest place it's ever happened to me was in the middle of the zoo. I woke up on the floor of the zoo with my (then) boyfriend yelling at me for "embarrassing" him.

I've noticed a lot of the times it's brought on by a too hot/too long shower, I think it heats up my body temp too much or something. I'm glad you weren't hurt this time! It can be very dangerous.

  18. Just wait until you get pregnant! I almost fainted in the mall a few weeks back b/c I did eat something in the last hour! It was scary stuff! I was by myself too!
I fainted once in college during a sorority rush party as we were all standing up singing.
    Embarassing.

  20. The first sentence made me think you were very hung over and slept on the bathroom floor. That I have done, but have never fainted. That is much more scary. Hope if doesn't happen again!

  21. I've never fainted. I can't even imagine the feeling. It sounds so scary to just be chilling and then you're down. Sounds horrible.

But you're one of those lucky ones, you look incredible even with bruises.

  25. Yup, I'm a fainter too. I woke up in high school on the hallway floor with my parents, sister, and dog standing over me forcing pancakes down my throat. The only times I faint though are if I stand up too fast, hear stories about blood, or am around needles/hospitals. Glad you're okay!

  26. Oh you know me. I faint everytime I go to the doctor, see blood, read about blood, get ears pierced, etc. They too told me I would grow out of it. When exactly does that happen?!? Glad you are feeling better! I think it was too much fun seeing me again that did you in :)

  27. Ohmy...I don't like to faint. Ever. Who does anyways?! I did it twice, once in a club (too hot and no air!!), and about ten times I could literally feel it coming but ended up not fainting because I did something to distract my body from failing on me. Don't ask me what it was but it worked. :( Still, awful!

  28. Oh Kate! My oh my ... this is scary. I think you need to carpet your entire home :)

In reality, I hope everything is okay -- looks like it can be a pretty common thing from all of the commenters. Do you know if your BP runs low? (Sorry, that's my line of work coming out)

Look at how many commenters you have that are so happy you are safe! :)

  29. I fainted once and sadly crashed flat back onto our marble floor in the bathroom. After 8 hours in the ER, I came home with just a large knot. I can't imagine having this happen multiple times. I was so scared with just the one. Thankfully you are safe and nothing terrible happened. Be safe!

  30. It's scary! I fainted once just after I had woken up and got out of bed--I found myself on the floor. Then once I fainted while playing basketball with my friends?? It's been a long time though, I think it tends to happen during the "growing up" years...hope it never happens again, that can be dangerous!
