girls night, suburb housewife style

The evening after I arrived back in North Carolina, I rounded up the troops for a girls night in my backyard. Although none of us are housewives, we are mama's to the cutest little dogs. Wish Lil and Hurley could have been there!

Cali hilariously positioned herself this way and then dozed off. She's one funny pup!

Katelyn snapped this photo on her iphone shortly after midnight. Yes - Shannon and I were running around my house sucking up all of the bugs that we had let in throughout the night. Nasty little suckers, they are!

Where my southern ladies at?

I did not grow up with bugs. I am discussed by how easily they enter and by how sneaky they are. Even when I barely open the door and squeeze through... I still let those damn things inside. Please help! How do I keep them from entering my house when I open a door? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I should add that I always turn off the lights (which is really annoying and I'd like to avoid doing so), but I refuse to do so when I'm entertaining. I have citronella candles and a bug zapper. I am doing what I can to kill them once they've arrived, but I'm hoping to get recommendations for what will keep them away in the first place.

Thanks!

  3. How funny, I love how dogs sleep! I live in the mountains in NC and I am so used to them. Spiders, flies, mosquitoes...yuck!! They have these new things out that look like a tennis racquet and they have a built in bug zapper. You just turn a button on you can swing at them and they get zapped!!

  4. Are you talking about, as we like to say in the South, Palmetto bugs??

  5. Try shutting off the lights inside when you open the door - they may be attracted to the light. Don't know if it will work and it would be a pain, but might be worth a try.

  6. The electric bug zapper is actually pretty efficient, but DO NOT touch that thing, it will shock the crap out of you. Also, you may want to go to Lowes and get the perimeter spray. you just spray it around your entire house, and it suposively helps keep the buggies at bay.

  9. Hang a bag of water. Apparently the reflection of the sun makes bugs run away or something. I could totally be making up the reasoning but i Know bags of water keep bugs away. Just found this shit out. And I'm not sure you want a bag of water hanging anywhere near your house because I certainly don't, but if you really want to get rid of the bugs, I'd google the bag of water thing and see what it's all about.

ha! Bugs are horrible but I suppose I'm used to it. The worst are fruit flies in my wine.

  11. you are asking ME about bugs? The one that has snakes and spiders and mice? Oh, and we open our door for a two milliseconds and fifty flies come in. Bugs are my extra children these days.

  12. With the bag trick that somebody mentioned, you need to add a penny in it. It's the reflection of the copper or something. One of my favorite restaurants has had these hanging on their patio for years and it always keep bugs away. I think it's only effective on flys though.
